What is THCa?
Tetrahydrocannabidiolic acid — or THCa — is similar to the THC you may have known and loved in the past. The only difference molecularly is that THCa is the acidic version of THC but this creates some interesting differences in application.
Anyone who has put a little “magic” in their brownies is likely already familiar with this cannabinoid as it’s the most abundant in marijuana as well. Since the compound is non-intoxicating on its own, it has to undergo a decarboxylation process — in this case through exposure to heat.
Will THCa Get You High?
Technically, no — THCa is non-intoxicating, and consuming it on its own will not make the user feel high. However, through the exposure of THCa to heat — say, through the use of a lighter — a rapid conversion takes place, decarboxylating the flower.
As a result, if you’re intention is to smoke the THCa flower, you should be aware it can lead to an intoxicating high as a result. We recommend not operating heavy machinery or driving if you plan to use THCa this way.
Can THCa Trigger a Positive Result on a Drug Test?
Yes — especially if you are smoking it. THCa rapidly converts to THC and our body metabolizes it the same way it would any other source of THC.
If you are in a position where you have to take drug tests randomly or repeatedly, we recommend steering clear of THCa. While occasional use can leave your system within a few days, regular and frequent users may have traces of the metabolites in their urine for up to a month.
What’s the Difference Between THCa and THC?
THCa is the acidic version of THC which renders it non-intoxicating on its own. This cannabinoid is the most abundant in marijuana strains, deteriorating and converting over time through exposure to light and oxygen.
